CHALLENGE: The goal of this project is to maneuver the harsh materiality of wood into a pliable or even melted image, conveying the fluidity of Mozart's iconic piece.

I acquired enormous inspiration while listening to Mozart's composition "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik (K525,I. Allegro)”, also named "a little night music.” The opening section's musical counterpoint is particularly alluring: the two sections of jumping arpeggios ascend in parallel, then descend, giving me the impression of an item expanding up and stretching down at the same time. To replicate this impression in my design, I added a backrest consisting of three individual arcs that represent the three ascending arpeggios repeated at the beginning of the music, while the shape of the chair's wide legs following a moderate taper represents the descending arpeggio in the second section of the music.

I was sculpting playdough models as a source of inspiration when I was developing this piece. I cut a piece of playdough into a shape like a squid sausage and found the shape to be quite intriguing. I believed it would be an intriguing contrast if I could create a really hard material that resemble a soft, silicone-like shape that stood on the ground.

I was fascinated by these wood carving techniques that carved wood into these soft, almost silicon-like appearances. This motivated me to investigate whether I could recreate the same result.

After considering various hard materials such as aluminum, resin, etc., I believe that wood is the most sustainable option for this project. By constructing several sketch models from different woods and comparing them, I concluded that walnut wood is darker and imparts a sense of sturdiness.
